I wrote this as i knitted it so if you find any mistakes let me know! The cast on sts are the top of the shawl, the cast off will be the bottom. This is a very basic pattern that you can then embellish - i used an eyelet pattern on random rows.(k2tog YO) The first stitches should not be slipped (as i usually do when knitting) but knitted. You can use any yarn you like with its corresponding needles. there really is no gauge You can also knit it to any size. Just remember that the final amount of stitches you have will be its width and the number of rows you knit will be the length. Use any yarn that works with size 10 or 5.5mm needles Gauge is not that important here. If you use smaller needles the scarf will be narrower, and wider if you use larger needles. I found the best result is achieved using yarn that works with size 10 (US) needles. Great for beginners! I used 50gms bulky yarn and #13 US needles. I dont use circular needles so this is for those like me who use 2 needles! cast on 50 sts. Knit 6 to 8 rows in garter stitch (all knit) change to knit stitch (1row K 1 row P) and knit 5 inches. decrease: K8, k2 tog repeat till end Purl K7, k2 tog, repeat till end Purl K6, k2 tog, repeat till end See a pattern forming? knit until 10 sts are left Cut off  yarn leaving a long tail thread tail through the 10 sts and gather up. I never seem to find the pattern I want, but this is an easy basic way to make a hat/beanie. I came across this great post and a link to a pattern which has a great sweater so useful when you live in a hot climate but the AC inside is always freezing! My latest project is triangular scarves or shawls - depending on how big you make them. I have figured out a basic pattern that you can then customize as you wish. I will explain the basics here and also some of the customization I made.
